Attaching a pdf as an icon, not the first page

When attaching a pdf doc to an email in Mac Mail, the first page appears instead of an icon. I tried getting the menu on the doc and chose view as icon. It changed on my machine, however the recipient got the first page instead of an icon. How do I attach as an icon?
