How can I delete pictures from iphone and keep them in cloud storage?

Once I turn iCloud storage back on after deleting photos from phone storage, won’t the photos disappear from iCloud storage when next backup happens?

Does Apple offer this service or should I use a service like Dropbox?

iCloud is a syncing service, not an archive. All devices logged into iCloud will always have the same content, so if you delete from any device it will be deleted from all devices. What you need is an archiving service. Here are a few:

  • Transfer your photos to your computer via USB cable
  • Sync to Google Photos
  • Sync to some other photo archiving service such as Shutterfly
  • Sync to Dropbox
  • Sync to box.com
  • Sync to Microsoft OneDrive
  • Sync to Amazon Photos
  • back up to Livedrive
  • Backup to any other backup or archiving service
  • Transfer them to a Flash drive through the lightning port on your iPhone, using a product such as SanDisk 64 GB iXpand Flash Drive Go - Apple

Special note for Google Photos: If you delete from Google Photos it will also delete from your phone, but the reverse is not true. If you delete from your phone it will not be deleted from Google Photos.

If you delete Photos & Videos from the iPhone the same is deleted on iCloud Photos too. So...

  1. Microsoft support says --> Import photos and videos from an iPhone to PC
  2. Import to your Mac --> Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod ...
    1. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac with a USB cable.
    2. Open the Photos app on your computer.
    3. The Photos app shows an Import screen with all the photos and videos that are on your connected device. ...
    4. If asked, unlock your iOS or iPadOS device using your passcode.
  3. Upload to iCloud Drive (Not iCloud Photos) using the Files App.

Now, you can safely delete from the iPhone as you have the Photos/Videos on iCloud Drive and your Mac/PC
