Battery Draining Fast / frequent overheating on iOS 16.5.1

Ever since updating to iOS 16.5 just over a month ago, my phone battery has been draining significantly faster, and my phone has more frequently been overheating even if not in use - sometimes just in sleep state I'll touch it and it will be really hot. The other day I had it plugged in to charge in my sister's car (phone screen off, shady area, genuine apple charger), and when I went to check it the phone was so hot that the alert said it would resume charging when it returned to normal temperature. That wasn't the first time it's happened since the update, but I don't recall it ever happening before.

There doesn't seem to be a strict consistency to when these things happen, with the only notable factor being that it started after I updated.

I don't use my phone for e-mail or any messaging apps/teams/social media/etc., and haven't changed any other things about my use. Background app refresh is disabled, iCloud backup is disabled, location services are turned off, brightness is manually adjusted and kept mostly low, raise to wake is off, etc. Most of the time my phone is connected to my home wifi (I work remotely). I've always made a habit of deleting unused apps, restarting my phone occasionally, closing excess apps, etc.

My maximum battery capacity is still at 85%, and I'm a little lost on what to do next. Are there tips or tricks I'm missing that could help avoid the random overheating and draining?

Hello Angriff!

There is one “trick” which seems to have completely reversed the unusual battery drainage and overheating of many user’s iPhones. It is the Encrypted Backup and Restore process.

Here is the process, as explained by another user in a different thread:

The links appear again below:

Link for how to Back up and Restore: Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or to iCloud - Apple Support

Link for putting iPhone in DFU Mode: If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!
