Deleting Transcoded Media (HQ Media) - What is the effect on Compound Clips?

I've always just left the Transcoded Media (HQ Media) in the library given that I typically have several projects per library.

The question is whether or not deleting HQ Media from the library using an external tool like Arctic Whiteness' FCP Library Manager will have a negative affect (other than performance) on a project which has a Compound Clip built from the Transcoded Media and had effects like a keyer applied?

Often I will get a client request to update an old project and want to make sure I still can, but want to save the space in the short term. Knowing that I can always transcode the original media which is stored in the library.

Thanks a ton.

Hi Tom,

The transcoded files were created (Create Optimized Media) during import along with the original media.

I have experimented with transcoding my original mp4 files to ProRes mov files in Compressor first, then importing to the library. My assumption is that FCP will not try to re-optimize them since they are already ProRes 422.

In that case there would not be (should not be) anything in the HQ Media folder. Choosing the "Delete Generated Library Files - Optimized Media should have no effect. FCP Library Manager would not see anything to delete other than original media.

let me know if my logic is off.

thanks

John
