reset device without passcode

I have an iPad with a forgotten passcode, and I just want to erase it. It isn't connecting to Wifi, so I can't remotely erase it from my iPhone using Find My. I tried the method of turning it off, turning it back on, and quicky plugging it into a USB cable to a machine running iTunes. That doesn't work, despite dozens of tries.

Are you holding down the correct button when you plug the iPad into the computer?

Thanks--I hadn't found that 2nd link you referenced, which seems as if it would have helped a lot.

The first link, to what I found, said, "Press and hold the correct button for your iPad while immediately connecting your iPad to the computer." I did that dozens of times before being able to get the thing into Recovery Mode, finally.

I wish I'd found the 2nd article you linked to--doesn't seem to require split second accuracy, much better.
