Hi Nancy Gee,
For help with using AirDrop from your MacBook to your iPad, make sure the settings below found in the article here are correct: How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
"Before you begin
You can change your AirDrop receiving setting to Contacts Only or Receiving Off at any time to control who can see your device and send you content through AirDrop."
If the issue continues while both devices are set to 'Everyone' test a normal restart of both devices. If the issue continues test with a smaller file as "Depending on your email provider and ISP (internet service provider), there may be size limits to the files you send." You can find this information and more helpful steps here: Transfer files wirelessly between your iPhone and computer with email, messages, or AirDrop - Apple Support
You can also find helpful information here: Use AirDrop on your Mac to send files to devices near you. Be sure to change the drop down to match the macOS currently installed for specific details.
Cheers.
A very common issue is that you don't have Bluetooth enabled on both devices.
