iPhone SE latest version-when receiving text messages sound is intermittent. HAVE CHECKED MESSAGE NOTIFICATIONS, (NOTIFICATIONS, THEN MESSAGES, THEN NOTIFICATION GROUPING.) Turning off phone completely, and focus is off for everything.
Very annoying -works at times, doesn’t at other times, Gone around in circles trying to make an appointment for repair/assistance at Penn Sq Store OKC, OK.

Do you turn on Low Power Mode on your iPhone? Since it reduces background activity and fetch settings, turning on this feature may cause the behavior you're experiencing. If you don't use Low Power Mode, do you recall anything changing on your device around the time this issue started? For example: Installing software updates?
Also, is this happening with specific contacts or all contacts? Does it happen when device is locked?

Thank you very much for a response. I do not use Low Power Mode so we can check that one off.
I believe it began just after system update 15 was installed, and it happens with all contacts. I can turn the phone completely off and the first message after having do so will sound off. It does it with phone on or off, I have known a response was due and had the phone in my hand and it doesn’t sound, wiggle, or light up/light doesn’t blink.
I currently have 16.5.1(a) Software installed.
I have never had anything but iPhones but sure want to toss this one, It is unacceptable.
