Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Many computer and automotive USB ports - in particular those associated with infotainment systems - often cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer and automotive USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you vehicle doesn’t have a suitable USB port from which the charge your iPad, it may instead have the ubiquitous 12V charging socket - to which you can plug-in a suitable USB charger for your iPad. Apple retails automotive chargers manufactured by mophie:

  • mophie Dual (USB-C/USB-A) 32W PD Car Charger

  • mophie Dual USB-C 40W PD Car Charger

You might alternatively consider charging your iPad from a suitably high capacity PowerBank battery (20,000 - 26,000 mAh recommended) - providing a fully portable charging solution.

  • mophie powerstation pro (45W, 20,000 mAh)

  • mophie powerstation pro XL (100W, 25,000 mAh)
