I was listening to music with my wired Apple ear buds that are plugged into the lightning port on my iPhone 14. I also had an Apple Watch SE on my wrist which was paired to my phone. The phone rang and I answered it by tapping on the watch face. But the call audio didn’t go
to my earbuds. The music continued to play. Did I do something wrong? Should I have answered the call with the line switch on the earbuds instead?

So what you are saying is that I should have answered the call using the line switch on my earbuds ( as I would if I wasn’t wearing the watch). Then I wouldn’t have to transfer the call.
