This happens only when using Siri to call. If I select a name from my contacts or manually dial a number the call goes through and car audio is fine. Obviously, I shouldn't initiate calls by interacting with the phone while driving. I tested this in my driveway. Anybody have a fix for this issue?

With the issue happening between Siri and your car, we recommend resetting Siri and refreshing the connection to your car. To reset Siri, follow the steps under "Set up Siri to recognize your voice" here: If "Hey Siri" isn't working on your iPhone - Apple Support
Then refresh the connection with your car by forgetting it in Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the "i" > Forget This Device. Then connect again: How to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your car - Apple Support

Got it. According to iOS - CarPlay - Available Models - Apple, it does not appear that this model of vehicle supports CarPlay. Because the issue happens with connecting via Bluetooth, have you had a chance to reach out to the car manufacturer about this? They may be able to provide a firmware update that helps with these kinds of issues.

Tammy, thanks for the suggestion. Siri works fine on my phone to make a call when I am not in the car, and I've already done the second part of the suggestion ("Forget this device") and reconnected to the car. The problem only happens when I ask Siri to make a call when the phone is already connected to the car. In that case it disconnects the call immediately after she responds "Calling <name>, mobile".
No, I haven't had a chance to do that yet. I will the next time my car is in for service. Thanks for the suggestion!
