Is there a terminal fix for the Venture 13.4 version of Finder?

The latest "upgrade" gives us a Finder which freezes, combined with a lack of a capacity to Force Quit the Finder, and an incapacity to Restart. Thus in a typical session on my computer, my finder freezes then won't restart, so I have to lose everything I'm working on which is still in the finder, so that I can reboot the computer. Tonight for example I had the enticing experience of six Finder freezes during a single session. Part of the problem is that I run an extremely secure system (which used to work beautifully), which includes encrypted files and folders and the more I use these files and folders the more challenges occur. In other areas, I've figured out ways to circumvent the evolving challenges inherent, but the Finder problem is making it practically impossible to use the system. My hope is than there's a Terminal solution/go around that would make Finder more functional.

I recently discovered a strategy that is going to save me hours with the freezing Finder fiasco. In my case, the finder freezes. Force Quit comes up with the "Finder Not Responding" message. At which point began the attempt to restart finder, which wouldn't work, then shut down everything and reboot. GIGANTIC pain in the rear. I've discovered that if I simply unplug the external drives I'm using, the Finder comes up. Plug the drives back in and away we go. Nothing lost! Thus problem solved, but not in the fashion I'd imagined.

Thanks me...

As Etresoft suggested, it is most likely one of your third party extensions related to the extra encryption or "Security" you are using. Yes, running the same system for 20 years is fine but if the third party software is incompatible with the version of the MacOS you are running, it won't work. If you are using third party tools to encrypt external drives, those third party security tools are notorious (many posts in Discussions about this) for interfering with normal MacOS operations.

Anything thing -- simply unplugging external drives without safely ejecting them in an orderly way is almost certainly going to lead to more corruption of those drives, which can lead to additional freezes and eventually one or more of them may not mount ...

I’m unaware of any widespread problem with the Finder. It sounds like you may have an incompatible 3rd party system modification. But it is likely that your system of encrypted files and folders requires this system modification.

While your system is at least somewhat functional and you still have access to these files, I strongly recommend that you remove them from whatever 3rd party encryption you are using.

Unless you believe this computer is a High Value Target for State Sponsored attacks ?

Whatever Third Party Security Software has been used maybe the source of this issue.

Starting in macOS 11 Big Sur and above.

The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

Then, Apple has introduced a means to Lock Down the Operating a little further outside of the usual FileVault and other security features built into the Operating System

To get additional security, would suggest updating to the current version of Ventura 13.4.1(c)

I've been running the same system for over 20 years with no problem, outside of the new problems which appear with each "upgrade," but never one affecting Finder. The problem (this problem, there's been dozens of others) began the day I upgraded ro 13.4.1. I have to maintain the security I use which is miles ahead of the Mac security which is (or was, who knows now), pretty good, but not good enough. I'm gonna continue, even if it means having to reboot a dozen times a day, but I'm praying for a solution...

I've tried running without the extra security. Removing it from my system completely, just as a test. Made absolutely no difference. Had friends over tonight to watch movies. Not using any extra security, just the basic system and an external drive which holds my video collection. Finder freezes, then won't Force Quit, if I unplug the external drive holding the movie, the finder begins working again, briefly, then the whole ridiculous cycle begins again. We finally gave up and never got to watch the remainder of the movie. I tried on two different computers, my piece of garbage MacBook Pro (worst computer investment I've ever made) and an older iMac which generally works quite well. Same result on both. I never imagined I'd ever be considering a PC/Windows system, but this is getting ridiculous.

As you seem unable to consider your problem is unique to your setup, I wholeheartedly agree you should switch to Windows.

If your problem goes away when you disconnect that drive, it sounds like a problem on the drive. Finder should be more robust about defective drives, but it will diligently attempt to make it work at the expense of everything else.
