What happens to the photos on my phone when I cancel iCloud?

Hello,

I have read plenty about the photos in the cloud when I cancel iCloud, but what happens to the photos that are still on the devices, such as my iPhone and my iMac?

Apple likes to delete ALL information from a device when an account is removed from the device, so I am afraid that all the pictures might vanish from the devices.

The photos are all backed up, so I'm not afraid of losing them, but I would like to access all the photos on my phone that I have taken with that phone.

Wondering if you have low-res copies of the photos on your phone, and Mac, or if you have the original photos.

(If you need to download the original photos, they would need more storage space than the low-res versions. )

Seems you would need to sort that issue out,

and

to stop syncing your photos to iCloud before cancelling an iCloud subscription.

As iCloud's main use is for sync of files across all devices, deleting files from iCloud (or any device), deletes the same files from everywhere that is sync., so that everything stays up-to-date.

Hi, brbo,

Yes, I do have the heic set, so I am downloading the originals. I saw the warning about the heic copies being deleted, so I'll download them, stop synching on all my devices, and then cancel. The links you posted are very helpful, too. I just wasn't able to find that for myself!
