Changing or merging Apple IDs

My original Apple ID is tied to my work email address. When I originally began using my Apple ID, I had no idea of the monster I was cretating! Now having kicked that can WAY down the street and nearing retirement, 95% of everything Apple...that I "own" is associated with that ID. Silly me...I thought I could transfer everything to a newer ID I created, that is attched to my personal email address, when my work email ceases to exist. Sadly, I now know that Apple IDs can not be merged. Do I have any other recourse? Does my Apple ID HAVE to be attached to a functioning email address, or might it remain operational, once my work email address goes away? HELP!!!!

You just need to create a new email and you can change your Apple ID to this new email address.

There are many places to get an email address if you do not have one. I would start with your internet provider if you plan on using that service for the long term.

You will still retain access to your Apps and purchases by following the link provided. As the first line in the support article states: "If you no longer use the email address that's associated with your Apple ID, you can change it. You won’t lose access to your contacts, purchases, or other account information."

This is the procedure to use when you no longer have the email address that you used for your Apple ID name.
