ipod classic 120gb 6.5 gen thin case

Ipod setup as an external drive and not synched to the library. 12,500 songs at 103gb. I backed it up to windows 10 explorer just fine. There are 50 files (F00 - F49) with the stupid 4 character alpha titles. When I look at the files in explorer about 20% of them don't have the name of the song.

I restored the ipod and copied the files from explorer to the ipod. The songs without a name (about 20%) were copied to the ipod with the stupid 4 character alpha name. I can't see the name of the song for these.

The 12,500 songs on the ipod before restoration had all the song names in them.

How can recover all the song names?

I don't want to manually go into iTunes and fix the 2,500 files without a proper song name.

Windows, Windows 10

I'm not sure what you have managed to do, but an iPod Classic can only have music that it can play added to it via iTunes (or Finder). When that happens, iTunes stores the music files with names such as F00 - F49 etc. Those files cannot be copied to anywhere else as playable music.

To the best of my knowledge (unless something changed that I'm not aware of) you cannot use the Classic as an external drive and get it to play music from fully named music files.

Your iTunes Library, that you used to add the music to the iPod originally, should still be intact, complete with the correct song titles etc.

What can be done though, is the music added to the iPod by iTunes can be recovered using third-party software. See this tip from fellow user turingtest2: Recover your iTunes library from your iPo… - Apple Community
