why is it that I can hear everyone on zoom but I can speak to them?

Besides making sure that your mic is not muted, one thing that is often overlooked is that Zoom allows you to choose audio inputs and outputs that may be different from the system defaults.
So it is possible that although your system is set to use your built-in microphone, for example, Zoom's chosen audio input is something else.
