Gmail no longer loads in Safari - gets stuck on Google Workspace page

I can no longer open Gmail in my Safari browser, it gets stuck and keeps reloading the same page. The status bar gets to the very end and then stops. I can open google calendar and google docs just fine, just not Gmail. I've cleared the cache and restarted the computer. Nothing helps.
