why does itunes show that i have items awaiting download? can i verify what they are prior to downloading?

i recently found some items were removed, so i would like to see what these items are. i have found that the number available is not equal to that i am aware was removed from a different device.. i am not sure why there are downloads pending.

There Are Purchased Items On The Iphone That Have Not Been Transfered to your Itune Library I have read all the post on this topic. My side window is open, I right click on my iPhone icon, I choose "transfer purchases", and when I reopen iTunes it STILL give me this warning message when trying to update the iPhone. I am tired and frustrated about something that seems so simple.

Sync issues "There are purchased items on the iphone that have not been transferred to your Itunes Library. You should these items to your Itunes library before updating this iphone. Are you sure you want to continue" i am getting this pop up and I am worried if I click on continue if all the data in my iphone/ipad will be erased? If I just want to updte my software and nothing else Can I proceed with continue and update my device? Or is it mandatory to transfer purchases to update? Any data wil be erased if not transfered. please confirm.
