When we delete photos permanently, Photos will be deleted from iCloud and all our devices and no longer save a copy for us to recover the photos. The Recently Deleted album is the only safety line offered by Photos. When we delete a photo permanently, we have to fall back on our own backups.

What kind of backups are you keeping of your Photos? Restoring from a backup will depend on whether your photos have been on your devices at all or only in iCloud.

  • If you have been using iCloud Photos, the iCloud backup of your iPhone or iPad does not include your Photos. You have the recover the photos from the backups you made on an computer, where you regularly download your iCloud Photos.
  • If you have not been using iCloud Photos your regular device backups will include the photos - you should be able to recover the photos on a mobile device (iphone, iPad) from the last backup you made while the photos have sill been on your iPhone by restoring the device from the iPhone (Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support). Or on a Mac by restoring the Photos Library from your Time Machine backup you made while the photos have still been there ( Restore from Time Machine ).
