no cell coverage battery drain

Ever since iOS 16.5.1 my phone battery drains very fast, especially if I'm in an area without cell coverage, where the "No Cell Coverage" appears to suck up battery life. Why?

When your iPhone can't find any cellular coverage it will increase its transmit power (and power used) in an attempt to get a response from a more distant cell. This is normal behaviour, working as designed.

I ask because it didn't used to use that much battery until after 16.5.1 update. I would notice a slight drop, but not to the extent I have now. To experience a 20% drop in my battery in a 2 hour time frame is excessive, especially for a phone that's only 14 months old and gets light daily use.
