macOS Ventura 13.4.1 upgrade - absolute panic

I let the macOS 13.4.1 upgrade run last night. I log in today and it's like I have a whole new Mac. Documents - gone. Photo library - gone (except for the backup on iCloud.com, which means I lost a ton of early photos that could never back up to iCloud). Keychain - gone (except for the backup on iCloud) Workspaces - gone. Desktop files  - gone. Toolbar - reset. App-specific passwords to apps on my desktop, iPad AND My phone - gone.

Short of shaming me for not having Time Machine anymore because I'm no longer a heavy user, can anyone tell me just happened? I'm looking for archive files that might have my docs or photos in them per some earlier recommendations, but not finding them. How come I'm seeing stuff on iCloud.com that I can't see in the Finder? I thought the whole point of a MacBook Air was to keep things synced with iCloud.
