Message Send Failure for Mac SMS after switching phone providers?

I have a Mac Studio and for the last year I've been able to send SMS messages (usually responses) via the message app on my computer.

I get a "Message Send Failure" error.

My troubleshooting steps so far:

  • rebooted computer. (Mac Studio, macOS 12.6.6)
  • logged out of my Apple ID inside the Messages/iMessage preferences on the computer.
  • rebooted again.
  • on my iPhone (12 mini, if it matters, OS 16.5.1(c)) went to Settings -> Messages, turned on "Send as SMS" which was off, and toggled Text Message Forwarding off, then back on, for the mac in question.
  • tested my other mac and it too would not send. (iMac macOS 13.4.1)

This only is affecting my ability to contact non-iMessage users. (Green bubbles.)

I recently switched my phone provider, and it's possible (probable?) that this started happening when I made that switch. (Switched from Visible [who I actually really liked] to Mint Mobile [because it was quite a bit cheaper].) I kept the same number.

Anything else I can/should try to get this working again?

Thanks in advance.

Mac Studio, macOS 12.6

Hello Mr. Bob Dobolina,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's check to make sure your date and time is correct using these steps:

"Set the date and time automatically on your Mac

You can have the date and time set automatically using a network time server. Be sure your time is correct so time stamps on emails, messages, and files are correct.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Date & Time on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Turn on “Set time and date automatically,” click Set, then enter a network time server for your region.
  3. Turn on “Set time zone automatically using your current location.”"

Additional details can be found here: Set the date and time automatically on your Mac

If it was or fixing it didn’t help, make sure that your iPhone is still forwarding text messages to your Mac: Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your Mac or iPad - Apple Support

If the issue persists, it may be best to reach out to Apple directly.

You can contact them by going to Get Support

They will take a closer look and check on available options.

Cheers!
