Removing old backups from LaCie thunderbolt usb3.0

unable to delete old backups from LaCie thunderbolt 2T

error message

the operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File>Get info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section.

When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.

After doing the above

I tried to delete the old backup

I got another error message

The operation can’t be completed because the item is in use

Per chance are these Time Machine backups? If so, try temporarily disabling Time Machine, and then, try deleting the backups from this drive. Alternately, you can try reformatting the whole drive if none of the data on it is critical to you.

Ok, I'm assuming that you connect this LaCie drive to your MacBook Pro and that you are using macOS's Time Machine to make these backups. You would know, because you would have told macOS that you wanted to use this drive for that purpose. Alternately, macOS would have prompted you the first time you attached it to your Mac.

These are the backups I'm trying to understand that you want to remove. Also, if none of the data on this drive is critical to you, you can just erase the whole thing.
