The cost can vary. Apple will have to inspect the device to see if there's any underlying damage from the screen. Apple doesn't list the cost of Mac repairs on their website for a reason, it varies widely based on what they find when they open it up. They'll charge you the most it will cost up front, then that could be higher or you may get refunded a small part of that. If it's higher they'll email you and you'll have to pay the re-quote or they'll send the device back to you.

A guess based on experience: $400 - 700.

Please make sure you have a good backup using Time Machine before you setup an appointment or call for send in repair.

Good luck.

So how old is this since date of purchase? Is it covered under warranty, as a refurbished device?

Based on personal experience:

Story About a Flickering Mac Screen:

I had this issue on my 2017 MBP, and had to send it in 11 times to get this fixed. The issue is the compactor going from the screen into the LogicBoard. It just became loose.

Based on personal experience.

Get this Serviced:

Why risk a faulty device?

It's Time for a New Screen:

Get one from one of the following three locations. Getting it elsewhere, you might end up getting an non-genuine display.

A. Contact Apple Support:

If purchased from Apple, or covered under AppleCare, then get this serviced by Apple.

  • Contact Us - Choose Locations
  • Proceed from there as necessary
  • Note: Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due to lots of calls. And that makes sense because with the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

Or..

B. Contact an AASP:

Also, take this to an AASP (Apple Authorized Service provider), asking for assistance.

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the Mac

Or...

C. Contact A Retailer:

  • Contact your local retailer, seeing if they replace these.
