Apple Mail Shows Icon for Unread E-Mail - Mailbox is Empty

Recently I've had an issue where a junk folder in my Apple Mail keeps reporting that there is one unread e-mail; the box is empty when I click on it (I deleted the junk a week prior).

I've read a post from 2020 where someone was given some ideas to try to remedy the situation, without any positive results.

Before trying a bunch of "difficult" fixes, I got the idea of logging into the web-based e-mail client of my internet provider, and seeing if there was anything there that might not have deleted correctly.

The answer was "yes"; there were two e-mails in the spam folder. One of them was the culprit that kept flagging Apple Mail as being "new". I deleted these e-mails through the web-based e-mail client and the problem with Apple Mail showing the icon with one new e-mail has been resolved.

Perhaps before going through the list of things to check on your Mac, one should log into their internet provider's portal and first see if the problem lies there. In my case, it worked.
