CarPlay not working after iOS 16.5 update

I am having the same issues on my 2022 RAV4 Hybrid XSE. Carplay disconnects every 60 seconds or so, and then I lose volume control ability on my steering wheel and on the main radio unit. I have to reboot my phone and the vehicle's radio to connect again with working controls, only to have it disconnect again. This is very distracting and unsafe while driving. I work at a Toyota dealership and Toyota corporate confirmed it is not a Toyota issue. We've have our technicians perform multiple tests and updates with no change. We are getting calls from Apple users the past few weeks stating they are seeing the same issues after doing the iOS 16.5 update on their iPhone. All users including myself did not have these issues until doing the iOS 16.5 update.

Apple- when can we expect an update to fix these issues?? Not only is this not practical and user friendly, but highly unsafe while driving. Many drivers rely on Carplay for everyday driving and commutes, this tool is useless if it does not perform properly, especially while traveling and needing navigation assistance.

Hi there ecosborn,

If CarPlay is disconnecting and not working as expected, you'll want to be sure you've tried all the steps listed below, including reaching out to Apple Support directly:

Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps—checking CarPlay after each step:
1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:
* If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
* If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.
4. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display and select it.
5. Restart your iPhone and your car.
6. Make sure that Siri is on.
7. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is on, tap Allowed Apps, and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.
8. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.
9. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.
If you still have issues connecting to CarPlay, contact Apple Support.

Take care.

Hi ecosborn,

If you have been referred to the same steps several times now, we recommend further contacting your vehicle manufacturer to further determine if an upcoming update will address this as this has occurred after an update. Typically with updates when compatibility changes, this requires a further update from a developer or manufacturer to address. If you have gone through these additional steps as you work for the dealership, you will want to follow up further with Apple Support so they can determine your next best steps after following the suggested path.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Yes, since I work at a Toyota dealership we've tried several updates to the radio system with no luck. We even contacted Toyota directly (we thankfully have that ability) and they told us it was an iOS issue. They are getting calls from several Toyota dealerships stating their customers are having the same issue. Customers who have not updated to iOS 16.5 have no issues, but as soon as they do the update the issues start. I will re-open another ticket with Apple Support.
