Use an external SSD as your startup disk with your iMac or Mac mini

@Jack-19 further to your post on this topic, you recommend using the LaCie 2TB Mobile SSD Secure USB-C Drive. I'm curious if I could use the Lacie Rugged SSD instead in order to move up to 4TB and NVMe speeds. I'm also wondering, if I use one of these SSDs with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), will I also be able to use the same external SSD as a startup disk for my M1 MacBook Air. Both machines are currently running Monterey 12.6.7.

Check the bus speeds versus the drive speeds.

A really fast SSD will be limited by the I/O connection, as external connections are longer and thus usually slower that internal.

Performance is based on the slowest component.

A fast CPU always waiting for an HDD is wasted.

With that caveat aside, most external SSD stuff will work fine.

Potentially at bus speeds, not at SSD rated speeds.

If the storage lists macOS support, all the better.
