Importing pictures/video into iMovie

I have a brand new Mac mini. When I drag pictures or video into the My Movie project, the files either show up as just black or of a very poor quality. Why is that? I have never experienced this before either older versions of Mac or on iPads.

Try deleting preferences. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. If so, reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

Something else that sometimes helps is to create a new project and see if the photos display properly there.
