Saving Emails and Attachments as .eml file

Hi

I just need to clarify what information is saved, and where it's saved, when I drag and drop an email to a hard drive.

This action seems to create a .eml file with all the attachments as a single file; when I double click on the .msg file, it opens in Apple Mail and it looks like a normal email with the attachments embedded in the text. The attachment graphic does not show a file size. It matches exactly what the original email looked like when first received in Apple Mail - and suggests that the information is stored as a complete bundle.

The problem is that double clicking on an attachment graphic results in an error; it reports that the path does not exist and provides the missing pathway eg - \\Mac\Home\Library\Containers\com.apple.mail\Data\Mail Downloads\xxxxxxx\name of file

However, if I choose ‘forward’ for the email, the attachment graphic then shows a size under it; and if I double click on it, the file opens. So obviously Apple Mail can find the relevant file.

Can someone please explain what is happening? I need the entire email is be stored as a single ‘blob’ so that the information integrity is maintained yet this doesn’t seem to be the case.

Thanks

Mac mini, macOS 12.6
