I understand that after installing a macOS update your Mac has become unresponsive. Is that correct?
Please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. If you are unable to shut down the Mac due to the unresponsiveness, force it to shut down: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
Hello John,
I currectly had Monterey on my iMac. I updated Monterey to the most current version 12.6.7.
Thats when I started having problems. The first time it turned on after the install, the icon apps I tried to open, Chrome, Discord, they just bounced up and down for 5 minutes. Nothing ever happened. So I shut it down and rebooted...
Now the apps open, but after about 5 or so minutes, and some times right away, the color wheel starts spinning and it will spin for hours.
So I re-installed the update 12.6.7 and it worked for about 5 minutes and the wheel started spinning again. Now I cant use any programs on my Mac without the computer freezing up and the colored spinning wheel spinning.
I am in safe mode now, while I have not got the spinning wheel yet, everything in safe mode is super slow.
I hope you can help me out of this situation? Can I go back to my previous version?
Thank you for your help and expertise in this matter,
Eddie
Although drawing a definitive conclusion is not a straightforward task, the symptoms you describe (overall slowness even in Safe Mode) tends to suggest that Mac's startup disk is not performing well. I know you correlated its poor performance to the most recent macOS update, but sometimes an extensive update is enough to push a disk that's on the verge of failure over the edge.
One more test to perform is to download and run EtreCheck. It measures a disk's read / write speed and may help diagnose the problem. A description, download link and instructions for posting its report in a reply to this Discussion are here: How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report - Apple Community.
EtreCheck is merely a data-gathering and reporting tool that does exactly nothing when it is not running. Apple will not be interested in what is has to say, but you ought to prepare yourself for the necessity to take your Mac to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for a conclusive diagnosis.
