HELP WITH 2-AXIS CHARTS

I am using Numbers 13.1 on an iPad Pro.  I have a table with 3 columns of data. My goal is to produce a Scatter Chart with two plots and two Y-axis with both plots sharing the 1st column of data as an X-axis.  I can not get there.  The closest I can get is a chart with 3 plots, 2 Y-axis, and I guess just equal spacing on the X-axis (shared by all 3).  I have tried both creating the chart first and adding the data and selecting the data from the table first and then creating the chart.   The results were the same.  My understanding is that when adding data to a blank chart, the first column chosen in the table, would be the X-axis.  When creating a chart with 2 Y-axis you have to initially pick the 2D-Scatter and later, under the “paint-brush” tool (whatever that’s called), choose Chart Type: 2D-2 Axis.  Also when converting to the 2-axis style, at least one of plots becomes a bar chart instead of points.  This is the point at which I now have 3 plots.  It took me quite a while to figure out how to change the plots to be all line plots (and here’s how: under the paint brush tool/Edit Series/pick a series/Show Series As: bar, point, or line with fill underneath).  I have figured out all this but I cannot figure out how to get the plots that I want!!! How do I force my first column of data in the table to be the values for my shared x-axis??? I can’t believe Apple has made this so difficult and unintuitive

Is there anyone out there that knows how to do this or even knows what I am talking about?

 Thank’s in advance, Ron

Hi Ron,

In Numbers a 2-Axis Graph (Chart) is a Category graph where the X axis consists of equally-spaced "labels". For example, months of the year. A scatter plot requires both X and Y axes to be variables.

Please post a screen shot of the relevant part of your table so that we can see what you see. Before you take the screen shot, "anonymise" all sensitive data by replacing with made-up data..

Regards,

Ian.

Ian,

Thanks for your reply.

There is one thing I didn’t mention. I have an ongoing need for this type of plot and I have been fighting this issue for a while. On one of my attempts, I sort of accidentally got the plot I am looking for BUT I don’t know how (I have tried so many things). Kind of embarrassing, but the point is: It is possible. Below is a cropped screenshot of a typical data table for which I would like to create a line/point/scatter chart that has columns 2 & 3 as axis Y1 & Y2 with column 1 being the shared X-axis.

Hello SG,

That is exactly what I want. Wow! Thank you. It appears that you used Numbers on a MAC and my initial thought was that you had done something not available to me on my iPad. But I did some exploring and found that I could make that first column a “Header Column” and Shazam! It worked!

That does present a plausible explanation of why I did get it to work the one time. I have no idea why that makes such a difference or even what a Header Column is or how it is different. As I tried to solve my issue, I searched the net for information from Apple that might be useful and I had not had much luck. I did download the official “Numbers Users Guide for iPad.” At least so far, I had not come across any mention of of this kind of thing being an important factor in making charts. I often have this problem with Apple “how to” searches. Add App and/or OS changes to the quest for Apple knowledge and it can be very difficult. If you can lead me to any good training on the subject, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge,

Ron

Before getting too excited, I'm not sure that was what you asked for. I think this is the same 2-axis chart you already tried that has the X axis data evenly spaced, not like a scatter chart.

It is not that Apple made this difficult and unintuitive. It is that Numbers does not have a 2-axis scatter chart. You are trying to make a chart that does not exist in Numbers. Unfortunately Numbers also does not have the ability to connect data points that have gaps (blank cells) between them. You cannot simply add rows so that your X axis goes 1, 2, 3, etc evenly spaced and use the 2-axis category chart. You can if all you want is dots, but not if you want connecting lines. It also does not have the ability to place the Y axis numbers on the right of a chart (other than the 2-axis category chart). So, while you can make 2 scatter charts and overlay them, getting the second Y axis numbers onto the right is sketchy.

Numbers does not have the chart you want or the ability to make a usable workaround. Have you considered Excel? You can add a second Y axis to a scatter chart in a few clicks in Excel. Check out their Home and Student version if you don't need to always have the latest and greatest and don't like the subscription model of Office 365. Or see if Google Sheets or others have this ability for free.

Yes, the key takeaway is that you need to pay heed to the use of Header Columns.

You need a Header Column for a category chart (where x-axis values are evenly spaced). That includes the 2D 2-Axis chart.

You do not want to plot a Header Column for a scatter chart (where x-axis values are not necessarily evenly spaced).

Depending on how precise you need to be, the 2-axis chart may be good enough to fit your needs.

Badunit,

Thanks for pointing out the X-axis issue. Evenly spaced is definitely not acceptable for my needs. Having a chart that at least “looked right” for a change, apparently distracted me from noticing that Numbers had not actually plotted X-data vs. Y-data. Also I never even imagined they would treat a column of numbers as, I guess, just text labels for the X-axis. I guess Apple has no interest in supporting the technical world. I have used Excel but it has been a while (years). Taking a quick look on Amazon, they sell a one-time purchase (download) of ‘Home & Student Office 2021’ for $149. I need to find out if that’s what I need for an iPad Pro 11” and whether that includes any updates that get issued. I sure wish Apple would get their act together regarding the need for actually plotting 1 or 2 columns of data vs. a 3rd column of data. Maybe this is why they call them “Charts” and not “Graphs”. So bottom line for me is - My problem is not solved and, in fact, might have gotten more complicated and involve spending money. Thank all of you contributors for sharing.

Excel has the same charts that evenly space the X data as if it is text. That's normal. A lot of times the X axis actually is text. But Excel also has the ability to add a second Y axis to a scatter chart (the only true X-Y chart), which Numbers does not.

I think for iOS your only choice is an Office 365 subscription. It may allow you to use it on multiple if not all of your devices, including Macs, all with the one subscription. I don't know for sure about that, though. I think there are various levels of subscription.

If you want to stick with Numbers, you can do what Yellowbox described with two scatter charts overlaid on each other.

I can confirm that the Office 365 subscription that I purchased on the App Store (or Mac App Store, I forget which) allows you to use Excel and the other apps on the iPad as well as Mac. You also have access to the web versions. And I think subscribers will get AI assistance as well! Among other things, I suppose that may eventually help with setting up complicated charts.
