How can I paint a background all white?

I would like to erase the "wooden" corners in this picture and make the white sheet of paper into the whole background. I can't seem to do it in Photos. Would other photo editing software allow it? I have another editor, Pixelmator I think it is called, but I never use it.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.4

On a Mac I would ctrl-click the plate and use the command "Copy Subject". This will copy the shape to the Clipboard. Then you can launch Preview, and when Preview is prompting for a file to open, go to the menu "File > New from clipboard". You will now have an image with a transparent background, that you can overlay on any background you like.

I just did this with this image in Photos:

And in Preview:

When I export this image from Preview without with enabling the Alpha Channel, the background will be white, when we reimport it to Photos:

So it can be done using Photos and Preview, no third-party editor needed, as long as the object has clear contours, that Photos can find.

It is a new feature in macOS 13 on the Mac and in iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 on the mobile devices. It is really neat.

To find it in the Photos User Guide search for "Isolate an object". It is hidden away in the "View Photos" section, not under "Improve Photos" where we would look for editing tools, see: Isolate and copy a photo’s subject in Photos on Mac – Apple Support (UK)
