In a week, I will no longer have access to my Apple ID email address so I want to change my Apple ID to my gmail account. However, I keep getting an error that the email address is not valid.

If the above is not working, where exactly does it fail? Are you sure you have the correct address? Apple should be sending you a verification email to that address. Apple does not say what happens if it cannot send it but maybe a "fail" message means that there is a problem with the address you have entered.
