External Monitor issue with Ventura

2017 MBP Non-touch Bar. Ventura 13.4.1 (c). Using an older Dell external monitor (S2309W) connected with a quality DVI-to-HDMI cable through a USB-C hub. Everything was operating fine, consistently, but suddenly, when I boot the laptop, I don't see anything on the monitor until my log-in screen appears. Again, this is now the consistent behavior.

It's been n ongoing struggle to get Ventura to operate properly, so I may have done something outside of the display settings to cause this problem, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions to bring this back so that when I boot I see the Apple on my external screen? All the issues 've had with Ventura have made me paranoid, and I hate the uncertainty.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

Just an update. I upgraded to a larger 32" Dell monitor, connected via HDMI through a hub. Finally realized I had two issues. One, I have to wait until the monitor "warms up" for it to display anything. I found this out when I had to restart the laptop and suddenly there it was, the white apple icon and the start-up progress bar. But, also, I discovered that one of my two Thunderbolt ports does not play well with the display when the hub is plugged in there. It works fine with an external drive, but I've had to switch my hub to the other port and now I get consistent display operation.

Not if was not used. Many USB-C docks work with macOS for their USB ports, and others, but need extra software to work with displays. There are others that don't. It seems that yours doesn't need that, so installing DisplayLink will probably not do anything useful.

I don't know why this has changed. There have been quite a few reports of displays apparently not working, but I don't recall this situation specifically, where there is only image when the login window appears, and not before. Maybe it has something to do with the adapter to DVI, but I have not used DVI displays in many years. If you have the chance to compare, you could connecting for example a tv with the same dock and a direct HDMI cable from the dock to the tv. If this works, then either it is something with how the display is detected or the DVI adapter. Sorry I can't offer more insight.

Does this USB-C dock require third party software "DisplayLink"? If so, you may want to check if there is an updated version.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know, I've searched for this particular issue but hard to sift through al of the display problems with Ventura that are posted. There was some reference to display port protocol 1.2 vs 1.4, but it doesn't seem i can affect that in Ventura to test if that's the issue. I have several display adapters, so maybe I'll play around with those, maybe even switching back to the VGA output.
