How can I show the @ symbol in a text?

Let's say I want to text someone, using Messages, an email address: "john@smith.net". Messages formats it to johnSmith.net because it thinks I am tagging 'Smith'. How can I stop this so that I can actually text someone an email address?

Seems to be some new "feature" nobody wants.

I don't know what it converts it into, but if you backspace after it converts, it will revert back to @Name.

I sent the converted name to my wife and it seems to just be text. I have no idea what the function does.

Maybe it is a help to people who use social media. I've heard if you put an @ symbol in front of a name it references that person somehow. Since @ does nothing in Messages, maybe it converts it to a name in your contacts.

How can I show the @ symbol in a text?
