Unable to save PDF's on HP Smart & Can't Scan from Adobe

Hi All,

Recently started using the MacBook Air 2020 model M1 chip again and upgraded to Mac OS Ventura quite recently.

I have an HP Color Laser Jet Pro M283

I have been unable to as of late, to save any scanned document via HP Smart App locally - The option to save to files / PDF is just not there. If I try save it as Jpeg, it give the option to save this (Which defeats the purpose)

I have also tried scanning in from Adobe Pro (Create PDF from Scanner), however, every single scan it errors out either with selected color format is not supported of incorrect file type.

I have reset my MacBook Completely (Complete wipe), uninstalled and re-installed the HP Smart App and downloaded printer drivers and nothing seems to work.

Is there a compatibility issue between HP Smart and MacOS Ventura / PDF's?

The ONLY workaround that I could find, was going to system, printers and scanners, open scanner and scan from there and select where to save to, which just isn't feasible in the long wrong

Any advice?

Have your tried Apple's Image Capture in your /Applications folder for scanning? I notice that the following HP models are supported via the network in Apple's built-in AirPrint:

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdn
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

Have you considered configuring AirPrint after re-adding the networked device, and trying Apple's Image Capture with that configuration instead of any HP software/drivers?

The optional, paid (free trial) of VueScan Professional supports the fdw model without any Apple or HP support.

Glad VueScan saved the day for you.

I inherited a Canon N650U flatbed scanner in 2010 that Canon had dropped support. Purchased VueScan Professional then and that scanner still works with my M2 Mac mini Pro using the current VueScan Professional version. I never have paid for any update to VueScan over the years, and don't receive any form of compensation from its vendor for mentioning it (often) here.

I also found that configuring VueScan to also perform Optical Character Recognition during the scanned PDF allowed me to open that PDF in MS Word (16.74) and convert it quite faithfully to a Word .docx document.

Ended up using VueScan as I urgently needed things scanned - Really miffed though, as I paid good money for the printer and the laptop for them to seemingly not work together - VueScan was great though, managed to do what I want
