iPhone making calls when locked.

While reviewing the call log from my phone service provider I noticed a series of calls to the same telephone number I did not make.

The number 034560219** appears to be associated with Lloyds Bank. This is not a number I have used and does not appear in my contacts.

I have contacted my phone service  provider who would only say the calls were mode from my phone.

I have also contacted Lloyds fraud department who are aware  that the number is known to be used by scammers but are not aware of a scam where the number is used to make an outgoing call.

There were no other calls either made or received on the day in question until 14:53 when one legitimate outgoing call was made.

I believe it should only be possible to make calls from an active App. running in the foreground and not possible from a background task and not when the phone is locked. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how this is possible?

Call log on iPhone

The “recents” tab mirrors the service providers log although it should be noted that phone number is prefixed with the UK international dialling prefix.

Device log on phone

I found this log on the phone (accessible via Xcode) that appears to be related to the phone activity on the day in question.

I have no idea if the information in this log is significant to the problem, in particular:

cause=kNoError;modemErr=1008;rat=1001

I notice that the entry at 9:51:47 did not result in a registered call.

I think I’ve worked out what probably happened and why I accidentally made the calls.

The phone was in my jeans pocket along with my hand. I naively thought all the phone functions were disabled when in the locked state, however search can be activated by swiping down from the centre of the screen. A series of random touches on the screen could have triggered the seven calls.

A swipe on the screen brining up the search screen and the virtual keyboard.

A double press of the letter ‘L’ brings up a search suggestion of Lloyds Bank.

A list of branches is displayed each with a ‘call’ button.

A press on any of these buttons would start the call.

I have disabled Search on the lock screen and, hopefully, this will prevent this from happening again.

How to Disable Today View and Search on Your iPhone Lock Screen

Unlock your ‌iPhone‌ and open the Settings app.

Scroll down and tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).

Enter your passcode at the prompt.

Scroll down, and under "Allow Access When Locked," toggle off the switch next to Today View and Search.

I hope this update helps, incase there is anyone else who is naive as me and, also, walks about with their hands tin their pockets!

If you feel an unauthorized person/app is remotely using, controlling or monitoring your device, then that is possible only if you have done one or more of the following Don'ts...

  1. Don't hand over an iPhone to kids or to a stranger without Enabling Guided Access
  2. Don't share Apple IDs
  3. Don't Jailbreak
  4. Don't share sensitive information pertaining to your device
  5. Don't give in to Phishing
  6. Don't plug in your device in Airports and Public places through third-party cables and trust the device. Beware of Juice Jacking. (Especially in India)
  7. Don't leave your iPhone unlocked and unattended in public places like offices, schools, malls, etc.

If one of the above is true then quickly change the Apple ID Password and Return iPhone settings to their defaults.
