Hello duncanmoir,
Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with a sound coming from your trackpad. ave you tried restarting your Mac? This simple step resolves a multitude of issues:Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't resolve it, let's test this issue in safe mode. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks on the software: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support
We hope this helps.
Cheers!

Thanks for the response. starting up in safe mode seems to have worked perfectly, as I am now noise free again.
Thanks so much.
