Icloud backup size large

I know this question has been asked before many times but I have not seen satisfactory answers so far. My iCloud backup fails to the available storage size. I have the regular 5GB storage. The next backup size indicates over 5G although I have excluded apps like photos and messaging apps. Looks like there is no explanation to this and only way to get around is to purchase additional storage space. I no it is not a big investment but I feel getting cheated by Apple here.

You need enough storage to take the old backup plus the new backup at least. One will not overwrite the other on the fly.

Anyone using backup to iCloud really needs more than the free 5GB which is only intended for Contacts, calendar, Notes, emails etc.

If you try to get 2 pints into a pint pot, nobody is cheating you, you need a bigger pot.

Thanks for the response. When I calculate together all apps which I have selected to backup I end up less than 1 GB. Existing 5GB storage use is a bit over 3GB. So 5GB should be enough. However, backup calculates I that next backup size is over 5GB. So I need to buy extra pint pot even if I am have less than pint altogether. Anyway, now I ended up purchasing additional memory. Price is not too much, more of a question of principal. Same Apple culture can be seen in connectivity to other vendor systems. And why the phone cannot be backed up elsewhere than iCloud? I have 1TB cloudspace with MS but no option to use that for backing up there.

Thanks again for comments. Yes you can backup to pc but it is not comparable to backing to cloud. I actually pay 100$ a year to MS and it provides licenses for MS Office for the whole family and 1TB for each family member. I would rather back up my phone there but not possible. Anyway, enough complaining. iPhone is a good phone but feel too locked in to it.
