Moving Ripped CDs from MacBook Pro 15 to iPhone 12 pro

I am using High Sierra 10.13.6 and IOS16.5.1

I have just ripped some of my old CDs to my MacBook using Apple Lossless encoder and an Apple USB Superdrive They are visible on the MacBook and play normally. However, when I synced it to my iPhone it didn't transfer any of them. When I re-synced it there was no change. Everything I have downloaded from ITunes/Apple Music is present. I subscribe to iCloud and normally that 'syncs' my phone and laptop. But not for ripped CDs. Is there something I am missing? Do I need to subscribe to Apple Music? If so, why? I already own the CDs.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks again

The problem is not that I can't sync. It's that the system won't allow me to transfer the ripped cds. It doesn't even say I can't. It just doesn't do it. So they stay on the MacBook but won't move to the phone. It's almost as if the system doesn't/won't see them.

Is this something about the Apple ecosystem not letting me move music I haven't bought from them?
