They're in an internal, hidden database on the iPod Touch – not out in the part of the filesystem that the Files app will let you access.

The original model for iPods was one-way synchronization from a computer to an iPod. No direct access to songs on the iPod. No copying songs off the iPod to another computer. As the iTunes Store and iCloud and Apple Music came along, the model changed a bit, but one-way synchronization is still the underlying model for songs that you have imported from your CDs.

The idea is that you can always go back to the computer (or to the CDs) to reload the music, say, if your iPod dies and you replace it with a new one. (These days, if you replaced it with an iPhone.)

If you ever used iTunes Match – or the corresponding synchronization function of the Apple Music service – that may affect the answer.

iTunes Match tries to find songs in Apple's library that "match" the ones in your lbrary, and replace the songs in your library with Apple's versions. When people were using 128 Kbps, downloading Apple's 256 Kbps versions presumably would result in an audio quality upgrade.

I don't want the system mucking around with music from my CDs, so I have left those features turned OFF.
