I am transitioning from using Music on an Apple TV 3rd gen to an Apple TV 4K and I really dislike the way that the Artists list is presented as large circles with photos of the artist. I wonder if it is possible to configure the Music app to more of a list-based interface like on the Apple TV 3rd gen or even like iTunes?

The 3rd gen didn't have access to native apps nor to Apple Music. That would be the way artists are displayed on all platforms. If you want another option then as above you can give feedback to Apple.
