Apple Watch 8 keeps locking while it’s on my wrist

This started today.

I checked settings to make sure that wrist detection was on. I cleaned the sensors with micro fiber cloth. I rebooted the watch and iPhone. I repositioned the watch to insure good contact. The locking persists. I think that I’m out of options. HELP

Thanks so much for taking the time to try and help me with this issue. I discovered the solution after I received a prompt from my Apple Watch the next morning, asking if I wanted to turn “sleep mode “ off. I did so and the watch locking problem was immediately resolved. Somehow “sleep mode” was inadvertently turned on during the daytime. Actually I’m a little surprised that this easy fix did not appear as a possibility to check anywhere in my search.

The first (and simplest) thing to try if something isn’t working right is to restart your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. If necessary (device not responding), try a forced restart. Both methods can be found here:

If that doesn't help, the next steps would be to unpair and pair your watch again and restore from the backup just created. This should result in no loss of data. It deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.

I was wrong to think it was solely the iOS update that caused the Sleep mode problem; I am back to this forum one day later to report that my watch was still in Sleep mode this morning when I took it off the charger, yet my phone went out of sleep mode when I turned off the wake alarm an hour earlier. Additionally, after taking it out of sleep mode, I noticed my messages had not synced with the phone - it showed I had 3 unread messages, yet on the phone all was clear.

I did a hard reset (hold the crown and the side button until apple logo comes up), and when it came back on, I went to unlock it and the screen went black! I could hear the 'clicks' each time I tapped the screen, but saw absolutely nothing!

Another hard restart got me back in and I was able to unlock the watch. It still had not synced, so I checked to see if it was paired via its control center to ping my phone and it told me "iPhone Not Connected."

I restarted the phone, and when all was back up again, the watch then showed that the iPhone was connected again.

However, my messages still had not synced - so not sure if it was still ok, so unpaired the watch and re-paired it.

After forever (it felt), the watch finally finished reloading everything and the messages now seem to have synced, inlcuding two I sent after the watch was back up and running - one from my phone and another from my computer.

If anything changes, I'll update.

Thank you for sharing the solution. This happened to me this morning after my iPhone automatically updated during the night - so annoying every time I need to quickly check my watch, even for more than just the time! The iPhone was in Sleep mode during the night, but goes off according to the schedule I've set, which syncs with the watch. I can only assume that the update turned off the sleep mode for the phone but not for the watch. When did the phone stop allowing me to update when I want?? I have apps running during the night that keep track of my sleep habits for medical reasons, and updates turn them off! Ugh!

Writing this has made me realize that this started a couple of updates ago, so went in and found Automatic Updates was turned on, so turned it off. Another thanks to you for triggering me to think about that. I know security updates are important, and I don't let them go long without updating, but at least I want to be able to control it.
