While you cannot scan a credit card that is NFC enabled and transfer money or get its information, you can do these things using NFC:

I tried to scan a card with NFC feature and was not able to auto detect it.
would the phone auto detect any NFC enabled device if it’s in the proximity?

NFC Device on an iPhone:
It may just not be compatible with an iPhone. So ask the device's manufacturer if it is compatible with your device. Provide them with the model and the iOS version (Go to: Settings > General > About).
NFC works automatically in the background on the iPhone XR when the phone is awake. There is no setting to turn it on/off as in the iPhone 7 , 8, or X.
