FCPX 10.6.7 keeps crashing/freezing

Final Cut Pro 10.6.7 has been released, and whilst there have been some users that have reported zero issues, there's many professionals that are reporting lots of unexpected bugs and crashes.

Dylan Bates - The Final Cut Bro has posted a video here explaining.

There currently doesn't seem to be any common thread - people on Apple Silicon, Intel, Monterey, Ventura, etc. are all reporting different problems across all areas of the application - from Viewer going black to full system shutdowns.

For now, I would strongly suggest you stick with Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 or Final Cut Pro 10.6.6 until Apple resolves these issues in a future update.

I've personally been pushing Final Cut Pro 10.6.7 pretty hard since it's release on a new, big and complex timeline, with heaps of Motion Templates, effects, stills and random footage. I've had to restart it a few times due to the Viewer going black, or strobing, and I've had several crashes.

Additionally, Final Cut Pro 10.6.7 (for Mac) uses a newer Library format than Final Cut Pro 1.1 (for iPad). This means that if you want to use Transfer Toolbox to go from Mac to iPad, you should keep using Final Cut Pro 10.6.6 (for Mac).

Hi everyone - happy to say I've found a solution that so far worked for me - let's hope it will last.

Try restarting FCPX and hold down COMMAND and OPTION keys as fcpx opens. You will be prompted to delete your preferences. I did. Then customised my preferences again to what they used to be. This trick seems to work so far! Hope it helps others too!

Someone mentioned running "Activity Monitor" to see what the memory demands are while running FCPX. I found that my external SSD drive full of video files was the culprit maxing out the 16GB of RAM and crashing FCPX. I could see in "Activity Monitor" the meter go from "Green" to "Red." I suggest that if you have an external drive just load it with files you are using for a project to prevent memory crashes. I hope that helps.

That's a problem with 10.6.7. If you can you should create XMLs of your current library content and revert to 10.6.6 or 10.6.5 if you have backups.

XML your libraries and revert to 10.6.5 or 10.6.6 from backups.

Revert to 6.6 or 6.5.

The application should not be causing crashing so there may be other problems involved.

Trash your settings whenever the application crashes.

If you have third party plugins make sure they have been updated.

You should also do a complete uninstall of CleanMyMac and reinstall the OS. Normally I would recommend a clean erase and reinstall of the OS and rebuilt of the applications without CMM.

Yes, it would. You should only migrate the user content. If you don't want to do a clean install, at least reinstall the OS. I'm not sure how effective that is in the new macOS column structure.

Do NOT use Bitdefender anything.

These "antivirus" are just a way to separate you from your money, while hurting mac performance without any security benefits. The only forms of malware that could affect you require you to actually install stuff. Keeping the system up to date, and using proper judgment are paramount.

Unfortunately Apple doesn’t make older versions available, except for older OS. If you can access a Big Sur system you can get a version that still works.

First, this is a user to user forum. To address the FCP engineering team you should use the feedback connection in the application.

What actually is the problem you’re having? Crashing and freezing? Have you updated to 10.6.8?

If you have a backup of 10.6.6 revert to that version.
