Touch ID Not Working When Connected to an External Monitor

When I connected my Macbook Pro (M1) to an external monitor (Asus ProArt) touch ID didn't work. It works only sometimes. Even signing in to put ask this question was done with the password since the touch ID is not working with the external monitor.

I have tried the following options.

  • Restarted the Mac.
  • Did shut down and turned back on with the Touch ID button.
  • Removed and added the fingerprints (I had to unplug the monitor and the charger for this).

I just don't get the connection between plugging in an external monitor and the touch ID. Why this is happening and what are my options here?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.4

Are these peripherals through a Dock or hub? ...Try directly connecting; try a different display to compare,

look for an update display driver Asus ProArt Support

Is this internal key keyboard TouchID or an external keyboard? ...make a change if appropriate

Make some changes and compare the results in an effort to isolate the issue.

Even though that is the case, why would an external display driver affect the MacBook built-in keyboard touch ID ?

Your guess is as good as mine... incompatibility / security protocols... (?)

This is really frustrating as I'm still facing this issue and I can't even find online help through Apple official channels. Almost every service provider has at least an online live chat service to help their customers. But, Apple doesn't do that. They only have phone numbers and physical locations. How would that help someone like me who lives in Sri Lanka? We pay the full amount for the products nonetheless.
If connecting an external display causes my touch ID to not work, that is terrible engineering since they don't even have a connection between their purposes.
Now, I have to type my password every time because the touch ID doesn't work and there is no place that I can get meaningful help.
I love Apple products and the history of the company. But, now I am starting to look for alternate ways. Not everyone can afford Apple monitors.

Hey geeth_sandaru!

I understand your frustration, I believe the support available in Sri Lanka has been here covered before, (Although it’s a little dated):

Apple Support in Sri Lanka - Apple Community

If there is truly no official Apple providers in that region, I would reach out to the government and decision makers there.

Anyhow, as for the issue you are having…..do you happen to have a different, or another monitor you can test this with?

As if the built in hardware has no issues with Touch ID authentication, I was wondering if the external hardware you are using has an issue communicating this security process. In either case, hope you find a solution!

Then, what I'm getting from the same page might be according to the area I'm living in.

I guess countries like Sri Lanka don't have an option for Apple official help unless we're willing to visit recommended shops physically. Not to mention that these local shops are not Apple Stores and they aren't really geniuses at Apple product troubleshooting, they are just sellers.

Anyway, I appreciate your advice and effort in solving this issue. Thank you!

Why would I reach out to the government to fix my MacBook engineering issues? This is a good example of violating the "Separation of Concerns" principle.

It is not just the monitor. When I plug my Mac into the power this happens sometimes as well. Also, the touch ID security process should be separated from other security concerns coming with connecting an external monitor. That is something I believe Apple would fix in their next OS version (hopefully).

Also, I'm not the only one facing this issue. I saw many people have raised this issue in this and other online communities.
