iTunes Skips Ahead Early

My music library is on my Mac (running latest version of Monterey). From there, I've shared my music, and can connect to it on a Windows PC (Windows 11 22H2) running iTunes for Windows 12.12.9.4.

If I play a song in iTunes on the Windows PC, near the end, it will move on to the next song in the list. Aside from the fact that skipping ahead can take place anywhere from :40 to :25 remaining, it's very consistent in this regard.

Am not sure how or why this occurs, or what can be done about it.

Hey djhalnon,

If we understand correctly, you've set up Home Sharing to share your music library from your Mac to your Windows PC. If that's correct, does this only happen when listening to your songs on your PC? If so, restart your Mac, PC, and network (modem and/or Wi-Fi outer) to see if fresh connections help to resolve this issue.

In addition to restarting all devices, make sure they are all updated to the latest versions. Those details and links to the steps can be found under "Before you set up Home Sharing" here: Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices - Apple Support

If those steps don't help, let us know more:

  • Does this seem to happen with particular songs or albums?
  • Are the songs iTunes purchases, obtained from another source such as a CD, or a combination?

Keep us posted.

Take care!

As noted in my original question about this, everything is up to date. I was very, very specific about the versions of everything I was using. Also, this is something that's gone on for quite some time and has survived many, many reboots of all devices involved.

Also as noted, it happens with every song. Not just one or two. Or particular albums. Or whatever distinction you can think up. It makes no difference at all. It happens with every song. No matter how the song was obtained; purchased, ripped, copied from something else, whatever.

It's nice you included an article that explains home sharing, but it should be obvious that I already got it set up and working. Or, maybe it wasn't? If I wasn't clear about that, I apologize.

I'm asking something fairly specific, and very obscure. Yes, I researched this before coming here to ask about it, but found no references to this problem anywhere. I did, of course, find many references to setting up home sharing, and other generic matters.

The generic solutions I already found have been of no help, so I expect generic responses like how to set up home sharing are not going to answer this question, here.

If we can focus, very specifically, on why iTunes is skipping the end of some songs, that'd be helpful. Thanks.

P.S. I work in I.T. I am not new to this. As I said, I provided specific information about all devices involved and their software/OS versions. I did that for a reason. I'm not sure why that information was missed, but it was. Again, if I wasn't clear enough, I apologize.

Hello djhalnon,

We're sorry if it seems we misunderstood. We must rule out the basics in every case. The issue you described meets some other issues we are investigating.

Please contact Apple Support, go through the troubleshooting to verify it's exactly the same issue, and they will provide the next steps, which might include deleting and redownloading a song, or even gathering info to check the logs in the background to see what might be causing this. They have to work through this step by step and determine the next best path or options to a solution.

Thanks.

As Eric--F mentioned, the basic causes need to be ruled out first.

To that end, I suggest that you check any of the problem songs (yes, I noticed that you said it's all of them) and check to see whether the stop time has been set.

To do this, right-click a song and select Song Info (or on iTunes' top bar menu, Edit/Song Info) and on the panel that opens, select the Options tab. Look for the stop field. If there is a tick in the box (check mark), the song will stop playing at the time shown:

In the screenshot shown above, there is no tick and the time you see is (in this case) the full length of the song. That time is 8 minutes, 18 seconds and 024 frames. You do not have to concern yourself with what "frames" are, they're so short that it's not something that you need to think about. What is relevant is if the stop field box is ticked.

If there is a tick (check mark) in the box, simply turn it off and then play the song. It should now play for its full length, even if the numbers in the field are not the full length of the song.

Don't check just one song, just in case you come across the only one in your library that is not affected. If you find that several songs have a stop time in effect, I recommend that you check the remainder as well.

FYI: when the stop field is used, you as the user, can then set the time that you want the song to finish. for example, if I wanted this specific song to stop after 7 minutes and 32 seconds, I type 7:32.000 into the field.
