Deleted emails stay in archive folder when using Mac Mail

I use the Mac Mail client with my gmail accounts.

When I delete an email from my inbox, the same message stays in my archive folder resulting in my archive folder becoming huge.

Is there a setting (which I can't find) that when deleting a received email, it deletes from both the inbox and the archive folder?

Cheers

That’s how Gmail works. How do you expect them to harvest your personal information if they allow you to delete emails?

There is a setting in Gmail to delete messages when you actually delete them. I think it is in the pop, IMAP and forwarding section of the advanced settings. You have to turn auto expunge off, and then you can change the other setting.

In a different setting under labels, you can just disable showing all mail label in IMAP.

It may be a function of how Gmail interprets the IMAP command. Normally, all it’s going to do is remove the inbox label (or whatever label is set in that folder). It would also have to remove the All Mail label. When I ran it in Mail, I disabled All Mail in IMAP and it would not keep the All Mail label with the settings you have set.

That alone would prevent all the excess storage even if it doesn’t fully delete.

They’d have to maintain a separate store of your info.

Thanks Barney-15E.

I've been told before that Gmail says it's IMAP compliant but in fact it is annoyingly only their interpretation. This has been evidenced when moving emails (within Mac Mail) from one folder to another in a different account. Every now and again, the email just disappears in Mac Mail and when you search in gmail, the message's inbox label has gone and no new label attached.
