adding firmware to MBP 2014

the device was completely erased at the apple store, at that point, there was corruption noted on the original hard drive. So, OS could not be restored. I got the device back, replaced the SSD, configured it etc. I then tried to install Big Sur. the device said I needed firmware to install the OS. Apple store has tried 3 different ways to restore the OS, no luck

Thought I would ask the community how they would do this... Thanks!

Just want to confirm this is a Retina model laptop.

What make & model of SSD is installed?

If a third party SSD:

What SSD adapter are you using?
What was the highest version of macOS ever installed on this laptop?
Do you still have the original Apple SSD?

You can not go directly to Big Sur. First install high Sierra instead, this will give you the necessary firmware updates. After that, you can upgrade to Big Sur
