I believe you can transfer music from your Nano to your MacBook.

It seems that, in order to acquire the content from your Nano to MacBook, you must use your MacBook’s library to sync songs, etc. That way, you’ll end up with copies on your Nano and your MacBook, since the sync process automatically copies your library.

The same principle applies to your iPhone. Sync the content, and the music, etc. will be copied and shared between your devices.

Connecting the iPod Nano to a MacBook, and doing iTunes/Finder-based synchronization, will wipe out all of the music on the iPod Nano that is not already in the MacBook's library.

iPod synchronization was originally strictly one-way, from a Mac or PC to an iPod. I don't believe that it ever was possible to buy songs from the iTunes Store, or subscribe to Apple Music, on an iPod Nano itself. So my working assumption is that synchronization is still one-way, if you are using Apple's apps (iTunes / Finder) to do it.
