Sorting text

On a Mac Mini using Pages 13.1, how do I convert text, broken up into paragraphs, to a table so I can then alphabetically sort the resulting rows? Or can I sort without the intermediary table?

Thanks

Hi JP from EG,

If, for example, Banana is the "first word" to be found as your key, try this after you convert your list of references to a table.

Formula in B2 (and fill down):

IFERROR(IF(SEARCH(B$1,A2)>0,"Yes","No"),B$1&" Not found")

Now sort or filter by Column B.

Please reply and our friend Viking will tell you how to convert text to table within Pages.

Using the intermediary table may be the quickest method. My choice was to use a Numbers table.

The sort was fast, easy and accurate, BUT…

Prepping required going through the text to ensure that there was a single return character to mark the end of a paragraph (which would become the content of one cell to be sorted in the Numbers Table), and removing the Table organization (ie cell boundaries) from the sorted text.

Frustrating puzzle that I didn't solve!

Sigh...

Thanks for trying. In the days when I used MS Word I recall a straightforward fu cation where you could select the word used to sort a list.

Whatever happened to that sort of method.

Even converting a table to text now involves importing to Text Edit first, then converting to text there and then copying and pasting back into the Pages doc.

Thanks but my sorting requirement is rather different to just finding one word. I need to put a list of 30-40 references in alphabetical order using the first word for that ordering.

I hadn’t realised that you can use Numbers type equations in a Pages table. That would be handy at some point.

Also I can’t see a way to convert text to a table in Pages, and the only way I have found to go the other way is to copy the table to Text Editor, use its convert feature and then copy all the resulting paragraphs back to Pages.

Am I missing some features?

J
